ELWYN IS SAFE AND BACK HOME
TO ALL OUR KELOWNA PEEPS
A Harris’s hawk is on the loose in the Kelowna area.
The bird that is native to Arizona, was in a backyard along Dundee Road near Falkirk Road in Rutland Tuesday afternoon, when she was startled by kids screaming in another yard. Alyssa Castle says the hawk, named Elwyn, flew away from its handler and has not returned.
Elwyn was wearing her falconry jesses and ID band when she escaped. She is not a threat to children or animals, but could be in danger from local wildlife.
“She’s a close family friend’s bird, a falconer who lives in the area, and we just work with her. She has been in captivity her whole life. She doesn’t necessarily know how to hunt or defend herself. So, it’s very much like a pet that is missing,” Castle explains.
The 12-13 year old bird is very distinctive, with dark-brown and black plumage and white-tipped tail feathers. Harris's Hawks are large and lanky raptors with long legs and fairly long tails and broad, rounded wings. Females weigh nearly twice as much as males.
